As per the scheme, select universities can engage the services of international faculty of their choice to conduct a one credit course that would last at least one week (10-14 hours) or two credit course that covers two weeks (20 to 28 hours).
GU Registrar V P Kamat said UGC expects that each course will be transmitted online and/or video recorded subject to approval from the expert for dissemination, archival and creation of repository of the activities conducted.
The Union government had recently approved the GIAN programme in higher education aiming to tap the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs internationally. “This move is to encourage their engagement with institutes of higher education in India so as to augment the country’s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform and elevate India’s scientific and technological capacity to global excellence,” Kamat said.
For now, the programme includes all IITs, IIMs, Central Universities, IISc Bangalore, IISERs, NITs and IIITs and select State universities where the spinoff is vast.
“It is a moment of pride to a young university like ours to get the present recognition under the Centre’s ambitious program,” Kamat said.
GU is also covered under UCG’s Faculty Recharge Programme wherein its teaching requirement is supplemented with lecturers and professors from abroad. Under this scheme, GU has received two assistant professors in the Department of Physics while two others will be added in the Department of Life Sciences. The selection process is undertaken by UGC and the selected teaching faculty member can then choose the university to teach at from those listed in the scheme.
