CANACONA: CANACONA: The Government High School at Gaondogrem, Canacona with its broken roof tiles and rotted timber has been posing a danger to the students, as well as teachers and staff.
The school mostly caters to the schedule tribe areas of Gaondogrem village panchayat. It has 146 students with classes from the 5th to the 10th standard with nine regular teachers and five teachers on lecture-basis and four non-teaching staff, who have ensured a 95 per cent pass out average in the 10th standard for the last two years.
All this has been achieved despite the odds faced by the students and the staff.
Speaking to the correspondent the Parent Teacher Association president Ulhas Madiwal said since 2013 they have been constantly writing letters to the director of education to repair the school roof, but none seems to care.
The timber has rotted due to the leakage and the school premises needs a compound, as presently there is a compound only on the side. There is a forest behind and the danger of snakes sneaking in is constant. Most of the time the Mangalore tiles that cover the roof have been broken by monkeys and it was not possible to replace them during the rainy season. There is also a possibility of the false ceiling caving in due to water leakages, he pointed out.
The entrance door to the girls’ washroom and shutter of a window of a classroom had given way due to water seepage. Earlier the local Public Works Department, which had an office at Chaudi in Canacona ensured that the maintenance of the school was done in time. However, now it was the responsibility of the GSIDC, whose engineer had inspected the building on three separate occasions but till date nothing concrete had happened, he stressed.
“It is our earnest request to the concerned authorities to take urgent steps to repair our school to avoid any tragedy,” he pleaded to the authority.
