PANJIM: Though BJP lost eight seats compared to its 2012 tally of 21, the vote share of party dropped only marginally by 1.78 percent.
The figures revealed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) show that although 32.9 percent voted in favor of the BJP, the party managed to get just 13 seats as compared to 21 in the 2012 Assembly elections when its vote share had been 34.68 percent. Congress, on the other hand, managed to get 17 seats with 27.9 percent of the vote share.
In terms of the latest vote share data, the BJP polled 32.9 percent, followed by Congress with 27.9 percent, MGP at 11 percent, Independents 10.7 percent, AAP 6.1 percent, Goa Forward 3.5 percent, NCP 2.3 percent, GSM 1.2 percent, UGP 1 percent, GSRP and GVP 0.6 percent each and lastly NOTA 1.2 percent.
Surprisingly, the data reveals that MGP is the only party which has managed to increase its vote share to 11.7 percent as compared to 6.72 percent in 2012 thus affecting the vote share of the BJP.
Addressing the media, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Kunal said, “As compared to the 2012 elections the vote shares have marginally changed in 2017 and despite the marginal decrease in the Congress vote share, it has managed to secure 17 seats.”
The data further reveals that Independent candidate’s vote share has also seen a decline by almost 5.97 percent taking it to 10.7 percent as compared to 16.67 percent in 2012. While NCP’s vote share, according to the data, shows that it has declined to 2.3 percent as compared to 4.08 percent in 2012.
Out of the 11.10 lakh registered voters in Goa, 2,90,532 voted for the BJP, 2,46,305 for Congress, 1,03,076 for the MGP while 94,729 voted for independent candidates.
Further 54,100 voted for AAP, 30,742 for GFP, 20,160 for NCP. Surprisingly, a whopping 10,745 voted for GSM which was a major player in splitting the votes which resulted in bringing down the BJP tally, while 8,563 voted for UGP, 5,631 for the GSRP and GVP with 5,379 votes.
Goa had recorded 83 percent voter turnout in the elections as compared to 81 percent in 2012.
