MARGAO: Goa Seamen Association of India on Saturday held a demonstration to express solidarity and support and demand justice to Capt Jagvir Singh Sidhu who is detained in China since July this year and whose wife is not allowed to meet him despite being in China.
Dixon Vas spokesperson for the Association disclosed that the ship MV Hai Yue that was captained by Jagvir Singh drifted in the Chinese waters and hence was detained. “While 8 other Indian seafarers who were on the ship have been since released, Capt Jagvir continues to languish in the jail,” said Dixon.
While disclosing that the Maritime Union of India is also backing the demand for Capt Jagvir’s release, he argued that Capt Jagvir be tried in India for his misdeeds if any instead of being tried in China.
Captain Venzy Viegas said this was a good instance to show the lack of procedure with the Director General of Shipping. “The procedure should have been that the contract between the company to supply man power and the vessel owner should have been approved by DG Shipping since Indian seafarers were being recruited,” he said while lamenting that this was not done.
