Women section in buses mulled

The transport department is proposing to reserve "one section" of the bus for women, and is putting the proposal before State Transport Authority (STA), which is likely to meet next week.

PANJIM: The transport department is proposing to reserve “one section” of the bus for women, and is putting the proposal before State Transport Authority (STA), which is likely to meet next week.

Director Transport Arun Desai said that proposals such as installation of CCTV cameras, Global Positioning System (GPS), ID cards for conductors and drivers and display of board on buses with all basic information including helpline number, would be also put up before STA. Desai said that Secretary Transport R K Varma, who heads STA, was out of station has returned on Monday. He said that during a special drive carried out in January, a total of 47 cases were registered against buses operators for allowing reserved seats to other commuters.

One case was registered against a conductor for being abusive to a female commuter, the director added.
