MARGAO: The feast of Our Lady of Piety or Nossa Senhora da Piedade will be celebrated with pomp and glory on October 20, at Chapel of Our Lady of Piety, Monte Hill, Margao, with Fr Dr Simon Diniz celebrating the high mass at 9.30 am.
There will be three other masses celebrated at 5, 6.30 and 8 in the morning followed by the High Mass that will be followed with a procession around the chapel compound.
This year the feast is celebrated by Dr Sicletica Rebello, owner of Rebello Hospital disclosed Attorney of the Chapel committee Caetano Noronha.
The chapel was originally built in 1569 and reconstructed in 1920 and since then the feast is being celebrated on this day. In earlier times whenever any crisis or calamity occurred the statue of Our Lady of Piety was taken in a solemn procession from the Monte to the Holy Spirit Church for veneration.
The chapel besides ringing the angelus at 5.30 in the morning and 7 in the evening, in earlier times used to also ring the bells every hour to let people know that an hour has passed and as the chapel is situated on a hilltop.
In 1980, Margao Municipal Council asphalted the road leading to the chapel, which is incidentally called the Calcada de Nossa Senhora da Piedade.
