PANJIM: The Progressive Front of Goa organised a discourse and interactive session on ‘Mhadei Goa’s Lifeline’ by Environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar on Friday.
This session was organised to spread awareness on the impact of Mhadei River on social, economical, cultural and environmental issues.
Progressive Front has arranged to send the discussion copies as documentation to the departments and authorities concerned for their knowledge about the issue.
Interacting with the people, Kerkar said the fact about the Mhadei River and how this river is destroyed due to Maharashtra and Karnataka government strategies. “The forest is very important to save our rivers and our life, but the construction of the dam and human-made structures are destroying nature, farming culture, plants and animals in the Mhadei area,” Kerkar said.
In the session, Kerkar introduced the different types of plants and ancient structures which was found near the Mhadei River and destroyed part of the river due to man-made constructions.
“Mandovi River is dying every day due to casinos and due to entry of saltwater in the river water. Till now around 11 km saltwater has entered in the river which is a very dangerous for the river. The people are raising voice against this issue but some negative people are trying to suppress their voices,” Kerkar added.
