PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the Director of Panchayats to initiate proceedings against the Chimbel Sarpanch for failing to deal with the garbage menace in its jurisdiction.
A Division Bench of Bombay High Court at Goa comprising of Justice Mahesh Sonak and Justice Mukulika Jawalkar has also asked the Merces Panchayat to clear the garbage in its jurisdiction while Deputy Collector (Tiswadi) is directed to submit action taken report.

The direction came after Advocate Aires Rodrigues submitted photographs to the court showing that despite various directions issued by the High Court, garbage and construction debris continue to be strewn all along the roads within the jurisdiction of the Chimbel and Merces panchayats. The court also directed the Merces panchayat to immediately clear all the garbage along the roads. The matter has been adjourned to March 23.
In 2017, the petitioner had filed a contempt petition, which is pending before the High Court over the inaction of the authorities to the continued dumping of debris and garbage along the roads.
He also stated that the government on June 26, 2008 had to identify and designate separate places for safe disposal of construction debris without harming the environment within three months. The government also assured to identify and place at proper convenient locations public receptacles, depots or places for temporary deposit or collection of non-biodegradable garbage within the same period.
