They have also handed over a memorandum asking him to withdraw the government notification in favour of SUMUL as it will adversely affect not only Goa Dairy, but also cooperative societies. Parsekar has assured to look into the matter.
Incidentally, the memorandum was also handed over to Industries Minister Mahadev Naik, Animal Husbandry Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, and the Cooperative Veterinary Departments.
Sawant stated that during the discussions, they informed Parsekar that the government had allowed SUMUL to procure milk from farmers who supplied milk to cooperative societies in Goa.
They stated that these societies would be badly affected if the farmers started supplying milk to SUMUL, following which Goa Dairy will have no milk for its production and its business will collapse. Sawant added that SUMUL’s entry would divide the farmers and that around 20,000 – 30,000 farmers involved in supplying milk would suffer.
Sawant further said that Goa has around 175 milk-supplying societies, out of which 165 societies are members of Goa Dairy. He added that there has been consistent production and equal retail sale of around 85,000 to 90,000 litres of Goa Dairy milk everyday in the Goan market for many years.
