MARGAO: As on 17 December, 10 cases of assault on government servants while discharging their duties, were registered by police stations in South Goa, this year.
The most startling case of assault on a government servant was reported on December 12 at Agonda when a Police Sub Inspector and a police constable attached to Canacona Police Station were assaulted by a local.

An offence under Sections 323, 324, 332, 353, 504, 506(ii) of IPC has been registered and the accused was released on bail following orders of the court.
Two other cases each were reported at Dabolim and Vasco while one case each was reported at Margao, Sanguem, Canacona, Verna, Ponda and Mardol.
In all these cases, the assailants were arrested after registering offences under relevant sections of the law but were released subsequently. Coincidentally, the similar cases were registered in South Goa last year namely in 2022. Of these, four were registered by Sanguem police, 3 at Vasco, 2 at Ponda and one at the Airport police station.
According to Adv Priyesh Madkaiker, such cases are booked under Section 353 of Indian Penal Code which makes it a criminal offence entailing a fine or imprisonment of two years, for assaulting any government servant while discharging duties.
It would be pertinent to point out that the highest number of such cases reported in the district, being 21, were reported from January to August in 2016.
Of these, six cases were registered by Ponda police station, 3 each by Margao and Cuncolim police stations, 2 each at Curchorem and Verna police stations and one each at Maina-Curtorim, Colva, Quepem, Canacona and Vasco police stations.
