In a recent update from the genomic sequencing lab at North Goa District Hospital, nineteen cases of the Omicron Variant BA.2.86 (JN.1) have been identified, including a specific BA.2.86 sequence, in the aftermath of a film festival held in the region.
Addressing the rising Covid cases, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant reassured the public, stating, “We will establish flu clinics, urging people not to panic as the situation is under control. With the festive season upon us, precautions remain pivotal.”

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, advised individuals experiencing cold-like symptoms to promptly seek medical advice and take a Covid test as a precautionary measure. “During the peak tourist season, hospitals will strictly adhere to the guidelines provided by the Central government. We will act based on government discussions and also consider inputs from the Chief Minister,” Rane added.
The Insacog dashboard, a central government forum for labs, reported a total of 20 JN.1 sequences, with 18 originating from Goa and one each from Kerala and Maharashtra. The cases in Goa were identified as cluster cases linked to the film festival, and officials emphasize that all patients experienced mild symptoms, were home-isolated, and required no hospital admissions or reported fatalities.
