PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Friday carried out a surprise anti-encroachment drive in the capital city’s municipal market.
Speaking about the drive, CCP’s Market Committee Chairman Uday Madkaikar said CCP had been receiving several complaints from various quarters and people that it has become difficult to walk in the complex due to the encroachments on the walking space.
“Despite our warnings and opportunities, the vendors continued to place their goods outside the designated space that they have been allotted. We had no option but to use the stick and implement the rules,” he added.
Madkaikar further said that right from the fruit sellers to the flower vendors and the home consumable goods, all had encroached and people found it difficult to walk through to the other side.
He said, “On Friday morning we conducted the anti-encroachment drive and confiscated all the additional material lying outside the allocated space. We confiscated around a truck full of goods.”
Stating that the owners who are paying the fine are being handed over their material, Madkaikar said “We have levied fines according to the quantity and type of the material. Some fines are of Rs 1000, while others are fined Rs 500. However, a total figure of money received from the fines is not known yet as there are owners who may turn up tomorrow and we will be able to know the total figure only after the process is completed.”
