The release comes after police registered offences against Colaco as investigations revealed that he had allegedly fired at Avinash Gunjikar. Margao town Police Inspector C L Patil said that Colaco who was asked to come to police station for three days didn’t turn up on the first day. Meanwhile the anticipatory bail applications filed by Javed, Rajesh and Badshah have been kept for orders on Monday and the trio is not to be found.
The shooting incident where the Gunjikar family was fired at in Kharebhand has shaken Margao and people are demanding that the police ensure that a strong precedent is set. The accused have allegedly been involved in other similar cases such as at Davorlim, where a family travelling in a rickshaw, was attacked in broad daylight and the police failed to take action.
“It’s not the first time that Javed and his gang have been involved in such crimes. The cases against him are going slow and investigation is not properly done. The cases against these gangs need to be expedited failing which people will lose faith in the law,” said activist Auda Viegas.
Advocate Rajeev Gomes who is representing Colaco said that arguments in the bail matter were put forward on the fact that “once the gun is recovered, the alleged accused is not required in custody as it’s not proven whether the bullets are fired from the same gun”.
Police sources added that they have the power to appeal against the grant of bail to criminals.
but the process is cumbersome as it was involves sending the application to the deputy superintendent which then goes to the superintendent then to the inspector general, then to law minister and other for corrections.
Sources said that this process takes three months by which time the case is cold and pointed out that the other three accused in the case – Javed, Badhshah and Rajesh – have already vanished.
“The law is far too lenient for such heinous crimes. Police have to investigate and make a stiff and strict case against such perpetrators and make sure they leave no escape route,” said a concerned Margao resident Croydon Madeira.
