GOA VELHA: Maina Sports Club defeated Young Strikers Club Benaulim 4-0 in the 12th London Trophy inter-village football tournament organised by Goa Velha Sports Club and played at Goa Velha ground, on Thursday.
The game began with a flurry of attack from both sides. Verson Fernandes of the Maina team received a pass from Nelson Fernandes and he ran down the right flank but his shot failed to connect inside the danger area. At the other end, Ossy Fernandes lobbed the ball Vellesly Afonso who controlled the ball and shot on target but an alert Maina keeper Johnson Bhagat caught it.
The Maina side finally managed to surge ahead in the 19th minute through Milagres Fernandes’ who shot into an empty goal after the Benaulim keeper failed to collect the ball shot by Verson.
The Benaulim side had a chance of equalising but Ossy Fernandes’s header went straight into the keepers arms as the Maina side lead 1-0 at half time.
On changing sides, Milagres Fernandes completed his brace by swiftly netting in the goal amidst a blank Benaulim defence.
Veon Fernandes made it 3-0 for the Curtorim team after he ran down the right side and shot into the corner post in the 48th minute. Clifton Barbosa added another goal making it 4-0 as the Maina side had an easy win over the Benaulim team.
