CUNCOLIM: It is almost a year since the Goa government handed over about 4.5 lakh square metres land to NIT, for the proposed NIT Complex at Cuncolim.
The government had acquired land at Cuncolim close to NH17, on the hill, to set up the Rs 200 crore NIT Complex, while the human resource ministry had announced that NIT will setup a multi-facility project at Cuncolim. NIT Officers said they would plant about one lakh mango plants on the acquired land and that the complex would be an unique project, which would also have facility.
It was expected that work on NIT Complex would start by this year, but till now nothing has been done and the land which was acquired for the complex is waiting for development.
Many believe construction work will take two years to shape the complex and even if they begin construction by 2019, the project would come up by 2022. The NIT classes, which are presently held at Government Engineering College, would also be shifted there.
On an optimistic note, the complex will be ready only by 2023, if efforts are initiated early.
Surprisingly, in spite of having custody of land, NIT has not started to clean or develop the land. Besides, there is no sign of planting any mango sapling leave aside the one-lakh claim.
Sources from the technical department said financial problem is the main reason why NIT work has not started yet.
The government seemed in a big hurry to acquire the land and NIT and government officials made tall claims that the project would be ready by 2019.
With this attitude one would be surprised if the project becomes a reality even in the next five years.
