VASCO: To find a permanent and futuristic solution to the growing garbage menace at the Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Plant (MSWTP) owned by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) at Headland Sada, it has been decided to have world class onsite biodegradable composting facility.
According to R Menaka, Director of Municipal Administration, the MSWTP plant owned by MMC cannot be upgraded until the existing garbage is cleared and hence certain instructions have been issued to MMC to find a permanent and futuristic solution to the growing garbage menace.
“There were two important things, which I noted during my last visit at MSWTP at Headland Sada. The first thing was that the bailed plastic was kept inside the yard itself and hence directions were issued to dispose them at the earliest. I have come to know that 50 percent of the bailed plastic has been moved out though the Goa State Waste Management Corporation and we are also searching some private vendors who could lift the bailed plastic so that we can clear it off,” Menaka said.
She said, “Also it was brought to my notice that the block ‘A’, which was cleared from garbage by the contractor is slowly getting filled up again and we want to stop it. We have already had discussions with the project consultant and he has assured to clear this block so that this place would be used exclusively for recycling and bailing of the plastic/dry garbage waste. Within the plot we are also coming up with another project of decomposing onsite so that the organic and biodegradable waste will be composed in the new biodegradable composting facility”.
Menaka raised her serious concerns over the manner in which the MMC has been handling the waste wherein from some wards, the municipality collects segregated waste and mixed waste from other wards. However, while dumping trash, the municipality labourers dump all the waste in the dumping facility located at Sada.
“In fact the norm is to have 100 percent door-to-door collection in a segregated manner. The ultimate aim of having garbage in a segregated form at the garbage disposal site will actually help us to manage it better. So we are reinforcing that and will ensure that it will be done. We will also try to upgrade the plant but before that we have clear the site and make separate facility for dry and wet waste,” she added.
