PONDA: Despite stricter norms in place to deter students from ragging activities in and around educational campuses, some senior students of Goa Engineering College (GEC) at Farmagudi-Ponda have been accused of ragging their juniors.
Instances of ragging in a KTC bus deputed to transport the GEC students prompted Ponda police to deploy policemen in plainclothes in the bus and they have now confirmed that junior students were being verbally targeted by their seniors.
Police has now forwarded a report in this connection to the college in Ponda for necessary action, even as college authorities have claimed that no such complaint has been filed in the college.
According to reports, the ragging incidents were reportedly taking place in the KTC bus transporting students between the GEC campus and Vasco.
The incident was confirmed after Ponda Police, acting on information, posted policemen in plainclothes on the KTC bus.
When asked why the police in plainclothes had not intervened while the ragging was going on in the bus, Ponda Police claimed that since the matter is connected with the students, a report has been sent to the college for necessary action to be initiated by the GEC’s anti-ragging committee.
When contacted, GEC Principal Dr Rajesh Lohani admitted having received a report from Ponda Police.
“I have received a report from Ponda Police regarding a ragging incident in the bus. The report will be placed before the anti-ragging committee, which will meet on July 24, to take necessary action in the matter,” said Lohani.
According to information, such incidents were reported soon after beginning of the new academic year. However, no complaints were filed with the GEC. “There are no incidents of ragging in the college campus. Besides, there were no complaints in connection with the incident reported to us by Ponda Police,” Dr Lohani told Herald.
