PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that the State cabinet has approved recruitment of doctors and nurses on contract basis to make Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities operational at both — South District Hospital, Margao and North District Hospital, Mapusa on urgent basis.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the cabinet meeting at Mantralaya, Sawant said the posts will be filled on contractual basis till permanent vacancies are advertised.

“There were no facilities in these hospitals because of which patients were facing problems. The ICUs will be set in both the hospitals. Till the permanent staff are recruited, we will issue advertisements for contractual staff. The ICU will be operational within the next two months. Four to five-bedded ICUs will be set up in each hospital,” he said.
The Chief Minister said, “Professors and assistant professors at Goa Medical College (GMC) will be recruited on contract basis because it is a requirement of the GMC.”
Sawant said the cabinet also approved the appointment of four occupational therapists, four behavioural therapists, two speech therapists, two clinical psychologists as stop gap arrangement in the autism intervention unit at Asilo Hospital, Mapusa and South District Hospital, Margao. There was a long demand for that. Both the hospitals will get 10 staff each.
He said various posts have been sanctioned for setting up a Language Research Cell under the Directorate of Official Language. The number of posts will be decided by the Directorate of Official Languages.
EC for sand extraction in 3 rivers within a month: CM
PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that environment clearance for sand extraction in Zuari, Mandovi and Chapora rivers will be issued in a month’s time.
“The Directorate of Mines has applied for the environment clearance and it is expected that the department will get the clearance in a month’s time.”
Permission will be provided for extracting sand by traditional method, he said.
Sawant said that the permission for extracting sand from Chapora river will be cleared soon as the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has already submitted a report regarding the feasibility and the spots where sand mining can be undertaken as per directions of the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
