MARGAO: Once again tension prevailed at the Margao wholesale fish market not over issue of sopo collection but due to fish being sold at retail price.
Vendors from the retail market of South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) alleged that even the authority is not taking any action against the retailers at the wholesale market.

In the early Saturday morning hours, a group of retail fish vendors from the retail market felt their presence at the wholesale fish market and protested against the same.
Further, warned that they will take law in their hand if the SGPDA fails to act against the retailers doing business at the wholesale market. Even the members of Margao wholesale fish traders supported the demand.
It may be recalled that retail fish vendors of SGPDA’s retail fish market had filed their complaint against the retail activities at wholesale fish market, but no action was taken till date.
“This wholesale fish market is only to deal with wholesale and not for the retail activities. The SGPDA has a separate market for the retail fish vendors. However, it has been noticed that several vendors are seen selling fish at retail price at the wholesale fish market, as a result it hampers our business,” said one of the lady fish vendors.
She further charged that the SGPDA for not taking any action against the retail fish business at the wholesale market.
“We are very much tired of demanding to stop the retail fish selling business in the wholesale market, and now time has come to take law in the hand. We are giving final warning to the SGPDA. Stop the fish being sold at retail price at the wholesale market immediately or we will act,” warned another retail fish vendor.
One of the wholesale fish traders also objected to the fish being sold at retail price in the wholesale market.
“Several complaints have been filed before the SGPDA demanding to stop the retail fish activities in the wholesale fish market. Now, we have decided not to pay the sopo to the SGPDA until the act,” he warned.
He further alleged that representatives of SGPDA are allowing the vendors to do the fish business at retail price.
However, later one of the representatives present at the site assured to take action against all the fish vendors involved selling fish at retail price in the wholesale fish market.
