CALANGUTE: The coastal belt of Calangute on Wednesday witnessed separate reusable carry bag distributions at Candolim and Calangute.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo distributed the bags with 2 kg onions in the premises of Candolim Panchayat, while of Calangute Sarpanch Geeta Parab distributed bags at Calangute fish market.
However, the separate distributions at Candolim and Calangute at the same time led to speculation of a rift between the two leaders. The speculation of a rift between the two leaders was put to rest by a panchayat source saying “it was a mere co-incidence”.
Addressing the villagers of Candolim, Lobo said the spiralling prices of vegetable commodities, especially onions, is having its effect on the common people.
“The UPA government at the Centre has failed to curb the artificial shortage of onions and others vegetables. Onions are available at Rs 30 a kg in Belgaum, but in Goa it is sold at Rs 60 a kg. As a protest, I am giving away 2 kg of onions along with the bags for the villagers of Calangute constituency,” said Lobo.
