Taxi drivers complain of assault
TIVIM: Two taxi drivers have accused a group of taxi drivers of assaulting them near a restaurant in Morjim on Saturday morning in what is suspected to be a case of business rivalry.
In separate police complaints with Pernem police, the two taxi drivers, Paul Fernandes of Morjim and Amjad Khan, stated that about 20-30 taxi owners had formed an unlawful assembly near a restaurant and had abused and assaulted them, besides threatening them with dire consequences.
Pernem police has registered the offence under Sections 143, 341, 323, 504, 506 r/w 149 of IPC. Head constable Nanu Thakur is investigating the case.
Man injured after falling off train
VASCO: A 40-year-old employee of the MPT hospital was seriously injured when his legs came under a train on Saturday evening.
According to reports, Suraj Deo Phadte of MPT colony at Desterro-Vasco was travelling in a train from Vasco to Dabolim, when he tried to alight from the moving train at the Dabolim station.
Phadte lost his balance and fell off the train. Both his legs were crushed in the incident. He was rushed to the GMC hospital in a serious condition. Vasco Railway Police Station head constable R Kadavalkar is investigating the case.
Missing minor’s father files plaint
MARGAO: Police have registered a case of kidnapping against unknown persons after a minor girl of 14 years went missing from her house at Raia on Friday.
Police said that the father of the missing girl lodged his complaint that his minor daughter was missing from the house since Friday noon. Police said the girl, who was studying in Std VIII, was at home while the parents had gone out for some work. On returning, the parents found that their daughter was missing from the house.
Since a search conducted by the parents on Friday evening and Saturday morning yielded no results, the father of the girl finally lodged a missing report this evening, police said.
The police have sent wireless messages to all the police stations with the description of the missing girl. Further investigations are on.
Apartment in city burgled
PANJIM: Unidentified miscreants broke into an apartment in a building at Taleigao when the owner Manu Dewan and his family were not around from December 22, 2013 to January 20, 2014.
Police said robbers broke the latch of the front door and made away with home appliances, furniture, two gold coins and cash; all totally worth around Rs 4.23 lakh.
The Panjim town police station has registered an offence under sections 454,457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code and begun an investigation.
One held for molestation
PANJIM: Panjim police has registered a case of molestation against Sebastiao Corrieo following a complaint from a woman that he allegedly wrongfully restrained her by using criminally force, held her hand with intention to disrobe her and made inappropriate sexual gestures and lewd remarks.
He has been booked under various other related sections of IPC as well.
Konkani musical show today
MARGAO: Cuncolim Union in association with the department of Art & Culture and the department of Tourism will organise a free Konkani musical show ‘Bhangrache Goem’ on January 26 at Cuncolim near the KTC bus stand at 7.30 pm.
Cultural Secretary Ramesh Desai informed that eminent artists of the Konkani stage will perform at the musical show organised on the occasion of Republic Day.
Elocution contest held at Mapusa
BICHOLIM: The NSS unit of Purushottam Walavalkar HSS Khorlim-Mapusa organised inter-higher secondary elocution competition to celebrate youth week. In all, 10 higher secondary schools participated and the topic was ‘Thoughts of Vivekananda.’ Suraj Parmekar (St Xavier HSS Mapusa) bagged the first prize, while Shraddha Joshi (Shantadurga HSS Pirna) and Manoj Bhishi (Harmal Panchakroshi Harmal) won the second and third prizes respectively. NSS programme officer Laxman Parab Gaonkar, Arvind Gaonkar, Bhagwan Banawlikar, Krishna Parwar and others were present.
Principal Anil Samant welcomed while Sharan Madgaonkar compered the function. Divisha Satoskar proposed the vote of thanks.
