Joe Cookies emerge champs

The champions kept their cool in the sudden-death after the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time

aCURCHOREM: Joe Cookies, Loutolim got the better of Fatorda Veterans, 4-3 via the sudden-death to grab top honours in the final of All-Goa Quepem Veterans football tournament organized by Navyug Vikas Manch, Quepem at Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) ground, Borimoll-Quepem, Sunday.
Joe Cookies were trailing 1-0 when Vincent Barbosa opened the account for Fatorda within five minutes of start.
Down by a goal, Loutolim went all-out in search of the reducer and their efforts bore fruits within five minutes after changing ends through the spot-kick by Jill.
As the match progressed, the teams missed number of opportunities but could not score and finally match ended with sudden-death when both teams failed to score during tie-breaker.
Joe Cookies, Loutolim were richer by Rs 20,000 while Curtorim had to be content with Rs 15,000.
Following individual prizes were awarded to Francis (Joe Cookies) best goalkeeper, Seby (Fatorda) best defender, Minino (Joe Cookies) best half, Robbin (Fatorda) best forward and Jill (Joe Cookies) declared man-of-the-match.
Minister of Fisheries and Labour Avertano Furtado was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Benjamin D’Silva, MLA of Velim; Bhaskar Nayak, Principal of Government College, Quepem; Fr Walter Miranda, principal of Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem; Fr Domnic Savio, principal of Pope John XXIII High School, Quepem and MLA of Quepem and Chairman of Navyug Vikas Manch Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar.
Earlier, during the exhibition girls match, Guardian Angel Higher Secondary School, Curchorem defeated Government College, Quepem by 1-0.
