Wages of convicts in prisons to be doubled

PANJIM: The State Cabinet on Monday accorded its approval to double the daily wages of convicts in prisons.

Sources informed that the Cabinet approved the hike in per day incentive of a skilled convict from Rs 80 to Rs 150, of semi-skilled ones from Rs 60 to Rs 130 and of unskilled convicts from Rs 50 to Rs 108 per day. 

Skilled prisoners are mostly engaged in weaving, tailoring, while semi-skilled convicts mostly do cooking, hair cutting, gardening and farming, while the unskilled ones are engaged in sweeping and cleaning of the jail premises.

The Cabinet also decided to discontinue with the scheme providing compensation of Rs two lakh to the economically weaker section families, who lost their sole earning member due to COVID-19 pandemic.
