SANGOLDA: Monte de Guirim Veterans went down fighting 0-1 to Joe Cookies Veterans, Loutolim in the quarter-finals of the Monte de Guirim Platinum Jubilee Veterans’ Soccer tournament, at Sangolda Panchayat ground, on Wednesday.
Joe Cookies now await the winners of Albert Developers and Margao in the semi-final which is slotted for November4.
Though Loutolim enjoyed the ball possession, it was Monte Guirim who were more penetrative and had their prodigal forwards been a little more on target could easily have emerged winners.
Ravi Pednekar on getting a defence-splitting pass from Alex Alvares shot past the upright with only the keeper Prakash Naik to beat. This miss was followed by Theophane Monjapilly failing to tap in from close at the far post.
Monte Guirim suffered a severe set-back when their star player Alex Alvares was knocked out of action after receiving an elbow blow to his rib cage from a rival player just before half-time.
Crossing over, Loutolim were awarded a free kick at the top of the box. Menino Miranda stepped up and curled the ball over the outstretched hands of keeper Diego Pereira to net the match winner for Loutolim.
Monte de Guirim tried their best to net the equaliser but they couldn’t get past the stubborn Joe Cookies defence line.
Menino Miranda bagged the Man-of-the-Match award.
