VASCO: Mormugao Port authorities on Tuesday dismissed as “speculative and factually incorrect” the concerns raised by concerned citizens and environmental activists from Vasco about the ongoing dredging being carried out by MPT.
The concerned citizens claim that in guise of maintenance dredging, the MPT is carrying out capital dredging.
“The concerns raised by the citizens are speculative and factually incorrect. MPT is carrying out the Maintenance Dredging work as per the NGT Order dated July 28, 2017, wherein NGT has granted permission to carry out maintenance dredging for keeping the navigational channel to the requisite depth of (-) 14.4 mtrs,” reads a press statement issued by L A Mathew, MPT chief engineer.
According to Mathew, the MPT informed GCZMA sub-committee members about the dredging on September 6, through the member secretary.
The sub-committee consists of Dr Antonio Mascarenhas, Dr P V Shirodkar, Suhas Godse and Dr Nandkumar Sawant.
