MAYEM: Stating that a lull in mining activity had led to the protection of lives from reckless mining traffic movement, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, however, admitted that a large number of mining dependent people have had to suffer due to an acute financial crunch.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the community hall of Navelim panchayat in Bicholim taluka on Friday.
“Mining has positive as well as negative effects. The stoppage of mining activities has resulted in less reckless movement of mining transport, thereby saving about 70 human lives a year. But at the same time, it is true that a large number of mining dependent people are suffering lot due to acute financial crunch. The State government is very serious in resolving this problem as early as possible. I am confident that mining activities would resume within a period of six months,” said Parrikar.
“Despite facing financial difficulties due to a halt in mining activity, the State government managed to provide all facilities to its people, besides fulfilling all promises in its agenda within a period of only two years.”
He also exuded confidence that BJP would come into power at the centre in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant, Sarpanch Gopinath Gawas and former MLA Pratap Gawas were among those present at the function.
On the occasion, different personalities were felicitated by the chief minister for their services in different fields.
