Mining firms diversifying use of jetties.

PANJIM: With uncertainty continuing to loom large over the mining industry, the mining firms are in process of converting their jetties from single commodity (iron ore) to multi commodity use. The permissions have already been granted to two jetties by pollution board.

PANJIM: With uncertainty continuing to loom large over the mining industry, the mining firms are in process of converting their jetties from single commodity (iron ore) to multi commodity use. The permissions have already been granted to two jetties by pollution board. 
The Goa State pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has received total seven applications from the mining companies seeking permission to convert their jetty into multi commodity for unloading of coal, coke and wood chips. The applicants have applied for consent to operate under Water and Air Act.
The firms have also express possibility of using these jetties for downloading cement, iron pallets, maize, raw sugar and sand.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the permission has been granted for two jetties owned by D B Bandodkar and Sons Ltd and M/s Counto Metals and Mining Company Ltd.
Three other companies – M/s Vasantrao G Mehta, M/s Bandekar Bros and M/s Pandurang Timblo Industries (PTI) (two jetties) have also applied for the consent. The board has also received application from one Ashok Kakodkar to build a new jetty.
