PANJIM: The High Court has directed the Transport Department to decide on licences for rent-a-cab services in Goa.
The issue, between taxi owners and rent-a-cab operators, had taken a political turn and has been pending as rent-a-cab operator demanded that the government legalise the business based on central government norms.
On Monday the High Court on Bombay in Goa heard the petition filed by the rent-a-cab association and directed the Transport Department to decide within eight weeks on issuing licences to rent-a-cab operators.
Rent-a-cab operators said that over 800 applications are pending with the Transport Department for the last two years and the department has failed to issue licences despite clear guidelines in the Motor Vehicle Act.
