PANJIM: The State Election Commission (SEC) has started preparing for the civic elections to Ponda and Sankhali Municipal Councils due in May, this year. The delimitation of wards in both the municipal areas is being presently carried out by the Commission.

As per the order issued by the Department of Urban Development, the number of Councillors to be elected in the ensuing elections is fixed at 15 for Ponda Municipal Council and 12 for Sankhali Municipal Council.
A senior officer at the SEC said that the delimitation will be finalised on the basis of parameters such as natural boundary, geographical continuity and number of voters. The distance from the polling booth is being also considered by the Commission while carrying out the delimitation process.
“Once the process of delimitation is complete, it will be kept open for suggestions and objections from the public and subsequently, a date will be proposed for the elections,” the officer said.
The process of ward reservation will be carried out by the Commission after it receives data on Other Backward Classes from the government.
Meanwhile, the SEC is also preparing for by-elections to six wards of four different village panchayats, which is reportedly scheduled to be held on March 25.
