For 80 year old, Asha Kudchadkar, her birthday this year was a special occasion as she released her first book, ‘Saraswat Pangat’, a book of recipes based on the Saraswat cuisine. The book was released recently and received an overwhelming response as it features over 100 recipes in Marathi with easily accessible ingredients. The recipes are written in a simple and easy to understand manner.
“I took six months to pen down over 100 recipes for the book. I was always encouraged to write by my family and friends especially Jyoti Kunkoliekar, who helped me put the book together. I would write down 4-5 recipes in a day and sometimes take a longer break which delayed the book. The book is divided into different chapters like vegetarian, non vegetarian which includes mutton, chicken and fish, breakfast and sweets for Diwali and Ganesh. There are also reciepes for children’s nutrition,” says Asha Kudchadkar.
Speaking about her motivation to write the book, she says, “I have felt that even though in Goa, people now prefer to eat outside, after two days, the third day they will still want home cooked delicious meals. With that intention in mind, that these recipes should be continued by the next generation, I wrote the recipes that can be easily cooked.”
The book sold over 80 copies on the day of the release itself and it has gained interest in Goa as well as in Maharashtra. Some of the recipes in the book include, Mangane, Tondak, Khatkhatem and Tousali.
The book will be availble for sale from November 8 at Dr Anupama Kudchadkar’s clinic in Panjim. “My daughter, Smita Naik Dalal, is working on an English translation of the book as many English readers also want to try the recipes,” says Asha, excited about her debut book.
