MAPUSA: Savlon Fernandes goal enabled Vasco SC register a hard fought 1-0 win over Calangute Association in the CAM Goa Professional League played at Duler stadium here on Friday
The Port Towners time and again attacked the rival citadel but managed to score only in the 35th minute of first session where a fierce strike by Savlon Fernandes took a wicked deflection off Calangute’s Umesh Pujar leg to see the ball roll into the goal 1-0.
Earlier in the match, two free kicks from Vasco’s Khrawkupar Tamu and then Cavin Lobo missed the target narrowly.
Two foreign signing Calangute’s Cameroon Junior Carret and Vasco’s Odili Chidi were thwarted by the keeper’s in one to one situation.
A minute before the end of the first session, Vasco’s Odili Chidi intelligently sent the ball to unmarked Prajwal Ghadi just outside the 6-yard box but the later tapped the ball over the cross bar.
On crossing over, the Beachside lads were a transformed unit and had two close attempts at the rival goal but Junior Carret and Atmaram Jadhav strikes hit the defenders.
At the hour mark, Vasco’s Cavin Lobo moved ahead from the right flank and after hoodwinking Jovel Martins latched a curling right footer which rebounded after hitting the top far corner of the goal and came to substitute Kartik Raina who ballooned the ball skywards.
Another glorious chance went in vain for Port Towners when Calangute’s keeper Presley Mascarenhas left his charge to thwart Kartik in one to one situation.
Calangute came close in levelling terms in the 83rd minute when Junior Carret was about to pull the trigger when Vasco’s skipper Kuldeep Kumar came with a breath taking clearance.
At the other end, Vasco almost doubled their lead but Odili Chidi placement hit the goal post after Kartik Raina had done the spadework.
Vasco’s Kuldeep Kumar received the man of the match award from the hands of Mr Alirio Lobo-President of Calangute Association.
