MARGAO: Alert Loutolim villagers on Wednesday caught red handed a vehicle laden with industrial waste unloading it at the barren land of Verna Comunidade bordering Loutolim village.
Upon receiving information from a villager Tony Vaz, Loutolim sarpanch Maria Monteiro conveyed the message to the Maina-Curtorim police, but the Verna police visited the spot after it was confirmed that the crime scene was under Verna village jurisdiction.
The sarpanch informed that the vehicle driver said the waste was from an unit in the Verna Industrial Estate.
He also informed that he was directed to unload the industrial waste in the hilly areas beyond the industrial estate.
Dumping of garbage along the internal roads of the village and in the barren hilly areas are regular concerns raised by villages of Loutolim and Verna.
Several dumps of industrial waste can be seen at numerous places along the roads of Loutolim and Verna besides bushes in the barren hilly lands on the outskirts of Verna Industrial Estate.
The dumping of garbage was also discussed during the latest gram sabha meeting on February 2 wherein it was unanimously decided to load such garbage and unload the same at the
entrance of GIDC office.
