MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council meant business and continued its drive against illegal encroachments along the road side and footpaths for the fifth day on Monday in a move to decongest the town.
Many shop and stall owners had to face the wrath of the civic body for carrying out illegal extensions or displaying their wares on the footpaths or along the road widening area.

Several teams of civic workers fanned out in the area armed with electric cutters and machinery scanning for illegalities in the town.
Chairperson Priya Mashal said, “Three municipal inspectors have been entrusted with jobs in different areas. From the last five days, the drive is going on but we are still witnessing illegalities galore and will clear the market soon.”
“People should not force us to take action and follow the rules. We want to put everything in place and give a new look to the market,” said Vice-Chairperson Viraj Phadke said.
“Before carrying out this drive, the Mapusa Municipality had issued a public notice to vendors who were given seven days to remove the encroachments but they continued to defy the law. The drive will continue against all illegal operators, goods seized and stiff penalties will be imposed,” Chief Officer Amitesh Shirvoikar said.
