Lincoln rightly said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” There’s something intriguing
about both, having a mother and being a mother. Mother’s Day is an occasion
that is celebrated in various parts of the world to express respect, honour and
love towards mothers. The day is an event to honour the contribution of
mothers, acknowledge the efforts of maternal bonds and the role of mothers in
our society. Some may argue that you don’t need a special day to make your
mother feel special, and while that is true and we must love, respect and
honour our mothers throughout the year, there’s nothing wrong in picking one
day to magnify that love.
A mother is
the one person who can take the place of all, but can’t be replaced… the
beginning of life. Everything, from our first step to our first morsel, is done
with our mums by our side. And her food! There is certainly no cuisine more
delectable than a simple meal prepared by one’s mother. A mother takes great
pride in her cooking skills. In our world of chaos, stress and anxiety, food is
the only thing we can count on, and yes, our mothers makes sure we eat wisely
and healthy.

asked a few Goans about the food they love the most – their mothers’ favourite
recipes:
As a
kid, the only pork dish I would eat was Goan sausages; until my mother
introduced me to her Goan special Sorpotel, which is simply heavenly and
delicious, but only when prepared by her. She nails the colour, the flavour and
the texture. In fact, I prefer having Sorpotel prepared by her only. No one can
do it better than her, with the love that goes in and her magic hands doing the
culinary tricks. I love my mama darling!

My
mother is an amazing cook and out of the number of things she cooks, one of my
most favourite is a Mangalorean dish she prepares, called ‘Surna Koot’ (Yam in
spicy coconut chutney). This is my all-time favourite. The crispy yam tastes
just too yummy in the spicy and tangy chutney. The dish has the ability to
compliment just about anything or you can simply have it alone. Just speaking
about it makes my mouth water!

My
all-time favourite dish made by my mom is caramel pudding. It is extremely
delicious, especially with sugar syrup on it. I just enjoy eating it when my
mom makes it especially for me on my birthday. My little sister loves paneer
paratha and enjoys it with lots of ghee on it; it’s something she asks for at
every meal. We both love our mom’s food and our mom very much!

My
mother believes that if you cook with love, the simplest dish turns delicious.
She has a good hand at pickles and cakes. My most favourite dish would be Green
Pork Sorpotel. Before the time she prepared it, I had never eaten or heard of
it. I have eaten the regular sorpotel but the green pork sorpotel satisfied my
palate. For me, it goes well with the sannas my mom makes. I am blessed to have
an excellent cook in my mom. Here’s wishing her a blessed and joyful Mother’s

My
mother’s favourite recipe and one of the most awaited dish at home is her Goan
Pork Solantulem, which is welcome at any time of the year at our place. Also
known as Pork Amsol or Pork Binda Sol, It is a simple non fussy preparation but
most importantly, it has my mother’s touch, which makes it anyone’s all time
favourite.
