CUNCOLIM: Controversy has erupted in Cuncolim Municipal Council over the special meeting convened on June 15 by Chairperson Polita Carneiro to discuss the no confidence motion against Vice-Chairperson Shashank Desai.
Desai and six other councilors, who have also moved a no confidence motion against the chairperson, have termed June 15 meeting as illegal, as such, have requested the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) to cancel the meeting.
On May 7, seven councilors, namely, Shashank Desai, Lavita Mascarenhas, Ashok Fadte, Videsh Desai, Kiran Naik, Angela Paiginkar and Uddesh Gaonkar had moved a no confidence motion against Chairperson Polita Carneiro.
However on May 7 itself, four councilors, namely, Mario Morais, Premdeep Desai, Succorina Coutinho and Penzy Coutinho submitted a memorandum to Chairperson Polita Carneiro to convene a special meeting to discuss the removal of Shashank Desai as vice-chairperson.
The signatories to the no confidence motion against Carneiro have questioned her authority to convene the meeting when she is facing no trust motion.
“Carneiro is trying to play politics with the help of her mentor. How can DMA allow such a meeting?” Desai asked.
Desai also took strong exception to Carneiro’s plan to hold a secret to decide his fate. “It’s the first time in the history of CMC secret ballot has been proposed to vote on the no confidence motion,” he added.
