For the love of Konkani

Konkani Bhasha Mandal is celebrating its 52nd Anniversary in Goa. Contributing immensely to Konkani language and aiding children in understanding it better, the committee presented ten awards to deserving Konkani writers

The Konkani poems and nursery rhymes
that we learnt in school were written by noted Konkani writers and poets and it
was the Konkani Bhasha Mandal that presented it to the students through the
syllabus. This year, the Konkani Bhasha Mandal is celebrating its 52nd
Anniversary and on this occasion, it has introduced a new award for spiritual
literature, along with the nine awards it already gives away.

Chetan Acharya is the 17th President in the history of the committee. Founded
with the aim of promoting Konkani literature and education, the committee has
encouraged the writing books in Konkani over the years. “Konkani Bhasha Mandal
was founded on September 30, 1962 by then President Pedru Correia Afonso. Other
presidents in the committee include Manoharrai Sardessai,  Keshav Bhembre, Chandrakanth Keni, Uday
Bhembre, Felicio Cardoz and Damodar Mauzo to name a few. Konkani Bhasha Mandal
has always promoted Konkani and we also take up any language issues that
arise,” says Chetan Acharya.

The committee organises annual workshops
on grammar and children’s literature and has also published books especially
related to children’s literature. This year on Children’s Day, Konkani Bhasha
Mandal will be releasing nursery rhymes books for nursery students, KG I and KG
II students. “We have also planned to release a children’s songs CD and charts
for easy learning for pre primary children. Besides this, we will be releasing primer
books, Konkani to English and Konkani to Konkani books,” concludes Chetan.
