PANJIM: The Election Commission is under pressure to change the April 17 General Election polling date for the State, announced Wednesday, which coincides with Maundy Thursday, a day of obligation during the Holy Week ~ with the government, government employees association and political parties making representations to it to keep in mind the sentiments of the people.
One of the requests was that the elections should not be held in Holy Week itself.
The State Chief Electoral Officer for Goa (CEO) has written to the Election Commission of India (EC) communicating to them the inconvenience which would be caused to the State’s influential minority community on account of the polling day clashing with the Lenten observance of Maundy Thursday.
Addressing media persons, CEO Keshav Chandra said that no sooner was the date announced and the clash noticed by them, he brought it to the notice of the Central Election Commission and that it is expected to take a call on change of date, if any, soon.
“We have apprised the EC of the development and they will take a call on the issue,” CEO Keshav Chandra told media persons.
Sources say that a decision is likely to be taken after proper representations are received by the Election Commission.
