Police stated that an unknown person had informed them about a body lying near Consua Cross chapel junction on Tuesday. Accordingly, a case of unnatural death was registered and the body was sent to Hospicio Hospital, Margao for the post-mortem.
The doctors reported that the cause of death was ‘hemorrhage and shock due to multiple extensive contusions on body and injury to multiple vital organs due to impact of hard and blunt object’. The police then booked the case as murder and started an investigation. The deceased was later identified as Vijay Sitaram Shrivastav (35).
Verna police station in-charge PI Shailesh Narvekar informed that a team under PSI Anand Shirodkar received information that the deceased used to load and unload fish at Velsao beach and Birla-Zuarinagar. He continued, “The team met a lifeguard at Velsao beach who informed that on Monday afternoon he noticed two women and a man take another man into some bushes near the beach and assault him until he was unconscious. The accused later called a rickshaw and took the victim away.”
He continued, “The lifeguard also provided us the vehicle registration number of the rickshaw, and thus, one Samashekarappa Chidanadappa Yemmetti (23), who owned and was driving the rickshaw on the day of incident, was nabbed at Birla. Through him we arrested the other three accused: widow Renuka Chavan (35), Mulchandra Rajput Yadav (52) and his wife Meenadevi Mulchandra Yadav (35).”
The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. However, police sources stated that Renuka, who worked as fish vendor in Birla, is the main accused in the case. As the victim used to allegedly harass her to marry to him, she decided to teach him lesson by assaulting him with the Yadavs’ help on Monday.
All four persons, including the rickshaw driver who allegedly dumped the victim near the chapel junction, have been arrested under section 302, 201 read with section 34 of IPC. The investigation is in progress.
