‘No Cong candidate in Sancoale’

VASCO: A senior Congressman from Goa Pradesh Congress Committee was annoyed to see that in Sancoale no Congress candidate filed for the Zilla Panchayat Election. A BJP candidate is on the verge of getting elected unopposed after the scrutiny of forms on Friday. The saffron party candidate is the only person till Thursday the last day to fill the form.

Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Vaman Chodankar opined that it was very annoying and discouraging to see that Congress could not field a candidate in Sancoale. As per his knowledge, one Ujwala Naik’s name was included for Sancoale area in the candidates list which was with the GPCC President Girish Chodankar. But surprisingly the candidate did not arrive to fill the nomination form, said Chodankar.

The senior Congressman also pointed out that Congress still has a stronghold in the Mormugao taluka but needs better administration and leadership which is lacking. He also urged Congressmen to unite and question the leadership on this issue.

“Only after the results of the ZP Elections, the picture will be clear if we want a change in leadership or not. The people themselves will decide if they want a change in party leadership,” Chodankar added.

Chodankar feels that Congress has a great future ahead but looking at such ignorance doubts arise.

“Even a Siolim Congress Block president has complained that a hardcore Congress leader was denied a ticket and it has been given to someone else. If things like this were to happen then I can’t foresee what will be the state of Congress in two years’ time for the assembly elections,” the senior leader opined.

“The GPCC president, Girish Chodankar, was supposed to field 40 candidates for the Zilla Panchayat polls, but we are not sure if Congress has the number. Chodankar must carry out introspection. It is sad that he did not find a candidate for Sancoale,” he added. Every constituency in Goa has a strong base of minimum 4000 Congress voters, he said.

On Thursday, Cortalim area saw Anton Vaz (Independent), Angela Furtado (Independent), Congress candidate Lopinho Xavier and Merceana Vaz file their nominations.
