MARGAO: Five days after a man was shot dead, and another left critically injured while carrying out illegal sand extraction at Curchorem, the police have not been able to find the assailant, and are still searching for clues to identify the weapon used.
The illegal sand mining at Curchorem, and several other places across Salcete taluka, had been going on unchecked until the High Court issued directions to the police to keep a strict 24×7 vigil on the suspected spots. The Curchorem police had however failed to patrol the concerned site, resulting in the fatal shooting incident.

The police have managed to arrest five persons- Vivek Naik, Amey Adel, Yogesh Adel, Vijay Adel and Ramdas Adel allegedly involved in illegal sand extraction, who were later released on bail.
“The police are trying their best and a search operation is on to nab the accused. We have not found any concrete evidence which can lead us to the culprit,” said Deputy Police Superintendent Nilesh Rane. He added that the police have verified all the persons owning firearms, either legal or illegal, in the locality and recorded all their details, but nothing has been found related to the shooting incident at Curchorem.
