PANJIM: Congress Legislative Party (CLP) on Friday resolved to move a private members resolution during the forthcoming Budget Session of the Assembly demanding the installation of a statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira – Father of the Opinion Poll – in the Assembly complex.
Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar said, “The resolution will be moved on the very first day of the Budget session. It will be signed by all 16 MLAs. Those who are in favour of our demand should support our resolution on the floor of the House,” Kavlekar said. The session will begin on February 19. It is likely that the Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo will also move a similar resolution.
In another decision, the CLP has decided to recommend to the State government to write to the Union Ministry for Road Transport seeking an amendment to the section 112 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, exempting tourist taxis from the installation of speed governors. “We will be asking the government to regulate the speed of the vehicles without speed governors,” Kavlekar said.
The meeting also decided to expose the government on the Floor of the House, pointing to its failure to fulfill the promises made during the last Budget session in March 2017. The issues include the casino policy, river nationalisation, coal pollution. CLP will also take up the government’s double standards on the Mhadei river water diversion, he said.
Charging that the Union Budget, announced on February 1, has nothing in store for Goa, CLP said the Budget was drafted with an eye on the 2019 LS elections.
