The Nuvem Village Garbage Management committee (with the Nuvem Village Panchayat Sarpanch as the Chairman), all Panch members and two residents from each ward have begun a garbage dumping clean-up drive along the National Highway (NH 17) passing through Nuvem Village.
Within a period of around one month all 5 (five) areas where garbage was being dumped in spite of warning boards being put up, have been cleared with the co-operation of the residents from these areas.
Strict monitoring is also being carried out to deter any further dumping including night vigil and early morning watch on the cleared areas.
Defaulters are being fined by the Village Panchayat as per the penalty for dumping in these areas. The success of this drive has been mainly due to the support from the villagers of Nuvem which has been truly commendable in tackling this menace.
The Garbage management committee will shortly turn their attention to the interior roads to address the issues in those areas too. A pilot project has been initiated to lift the wet waste from pre-determined areas while collection of dry waste is already in place for the entire village. There has been a lot of support from the Goa Police Department too in the form of the beat Police monitoring any dumping in the aforesaid cleared areas.
The Nuvem village Panchayat and Garbage committee members sincerely appeal to all the villagers to continue to maintain a strict vigil and report any persons found dumping their waste along the National Highway 17 since this is considered to be an offence punishable by law and those charged with littering the place will be challaned.
