PANJIM: In a significant development in the medical education sector in the State, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has approved the conversion of several post graduate diploma course seats to degree seats from academic year 2020-21.

Out of many government and private medical colleges across the country, the ministry has included courses in the Goa Medical College. The upgradation of the course has also led to increase in degree seats.
The courses include Diploma in Public Health wherein the seats have been increased from five to seven; Diploma in Psychological Medicine (seats from 6 to 8), Diploma in Dermatology, Vereneology & Leprosy (3 to 5), Diploma in Anesthesia (6 to 10), Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (5 to 6), Diploma in Radio-Diagnosis (2 to 6) and Diploma in Child Health (3 to 7).
In a letter to Secretary General Dr Rakesh Rao Vats, the Board of Governors of Medical Council of India stated that the permission to convert diploma to degree seats are subject to affiliation of additional PG degree seats by the concerned University.
While requesting the ministry to issue notification/letter of recognition, MCI further said, “It may be clearly stated that recognition was granted to degree seats created by way of surrender and conversion of diploma seats, so that confusion with regards to timeline of recognition of degree seats is avoided.”
