QUEPEM: Some Quepem fishermen on Thursday met Quepem Municipal Council chairperson for stopping them from selling fish in the markets from past few days.

They also criticised the chairperson for injustice done to them by allowing few preferred fishermen to sell fish.
On the issue, Chairperson Dayesh Naik said, “At most places especially on the roadside the locals and fishermen started business for livelihood due to COVID-19 pandemic situation in the State, which is a good thing. But at the same time, at some places crowd used to gather in large numbers around the fishermen raising questions about the COVID infection as no social distancing norm was followed.”
“The Council had taken decision that the markets will remain open every day. Before it was on the alternate days due to COVID-19 pandemic,” Naik said.
“Sunday markets will be open but there are precautionary measures to be followed. In Quepem, there are three fish markets at Quepem, Ambaulim and Tilamol, which comes under the Quepem municipality jurisdiction. Now, the municipality has decided to place these fishermen in these three respective markets keeping in mind the pandemic situation. We were not allowing some fishermen at the markets, which were found crowded past few days and not following social distancing norm,” the chairperson added.
