Year 2008 saw valuable property worth nearly rupees one crore gutted in fire in the Margao fire sub-division.
Around 20 major fires were reported in the sub-division, mostly in the Salcete area of the state, including the fire to a plantation at Raia and a fish shed at Benaulim, which reported loss of Rs five lakh each. Another major fire reported during his period was the fire in a starred resort at Cavelossim, which gutted property worth Rs 18.98 lakhs. Statistics released by the divisional fire Officer, Ashok Parab, however, revealed that the fire services were able to save property worth over Rs 2.10 crore from destruction.
During the year, the fire services received a total of 485 calls, including 175 fire calls, 47 rescue calls and 255 other calls. Of the 175 fire calls, 20 calls were described as major calls. During the year, the fire services managed to save around 20 human lives and 25 lives of animals, including that of dogs, cats, cattle etc.
