MARGAO: There was a tense situation at the Western India Shipyard Ltd premises, where agitated workers blocked the company officials who had came for an audit on Saturday.
It may be recalled that the WISL workers have been agitating for their salaries, which are pending for the last several months.
On Saturday, the company had sent officials for an audit allegedly without informing the workers and without identity proof. The workers stopped the auditors from entering the office as they were afraid the latter were up to some mischief, leading to a tensed situation.
The Mormugao mamlatdar rushed to the site along with Mormugao PI Kapil Nayak and a huge police force. After discussions with the police, the workers allowed the auditors to leave, and the latter were accompanied out by the police.
Meanwhile, speaking on the salary issue, Goa Shiv Sena chief and Goa Trade Union Confederation (GTUC) president Advocate Ajitsingh Rane said that the workers had resolved to hold a massive protest at Panjim in the days to come.
WISL workers also alleged that they had made several efforts to get the salary issue resolved, but the company heads were least bothered about fulfilling their demands.
“The State BJP government gave assurances, but finally remained a mute spectator. We cannot tolerate such an attitude from the government, and thus, we will hold a massive protest to open the government’s eyes. If we still see no action from the government, then we might intensify our agitation,” said a WISL worker.
