MARGAO: Major tragedy was averted by an alert 13-year-old boy from Fatorda who noticed a fire at his house alerted his neighbours who helped to contain the fire thereby saved properties worth crores of rupees.
Master Bryce Vaz, studying at Loyola High School, was at his home when a short circuit of the air-conditioning power point in the main hall resulted in a fire at around 4.20 pm in the evening.
While his mother had gone to drop his sister for tuition, Bryce who was sleeping on the first floor bedroom woke up after hearing a big bang; he then climbed down main hall where he noticed a fire. Thereafter, Bryce immediately ran back to the top floor, climbed through the balcony of the attached neighbour’s villa and alerted them.
The neighbours after alerting the fire brigade put out the fire before the fire personnel could arrive.
The loss is estimated at Rs. 2.50 lakh and had it not been for Bryce’s presence of mind, his housed would have suffered damage running into crorores of ruppes.
This is the second time Bryce alerted the neighbours of a major problem. Two years ago while playing in the society parking area he had seen sparks flying from a parked car and had alerted the people nearby who doused the fire.
Bryce is son of Dixon Vaz, the president of Goa Seamen Association of India.
