MARGAO: BRICS summit has facilitated lots of cleaning and improvement of roads on the route of the VIPs. But the Kadamba Bus Stand at Margao is full of garbage nowadays. Most of this garbage is created by the people boarding and leaving buses at the KTC Stand and the scattering is done by the bus cleaners and drivers.
The dirt left over in a bus is cleaned at the bus stand and just thrown outside resulting in spread of garbage. This is, at present, spoiling the impression of the state as domestic and international tourists use this bus stop frequently.
Thousands of travellers and tourists travel from this bus stand to Panjim, Canacona and even to Metro cities of India as tourists and one such tourist expressed her anger and frustration over the garbage spread all over the place.
Ms Nadaisa Gomes, a Goan who travels to Mumbai often, said, “I got down from Mumbai bus and did not expect the bus stand to be in this state.” “This bus stand has to be responsibly kept clean by the authorities because if a Goan feels so bad at this place then what image will the tourists be taking from here?” asked Nadaisa.
“BRICS has helped into cleaning and upkeeping of areas where the PM and heads of countries will travel from. But who cleans these areas?” she asked.
A Margao student Simran Prabhu Malkarnekar, while commenting on the issue, said, “It is ironic that the Governor of Goa is the first nominee of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan but the condition here is exactly opposite,” she said.
“The inter-state buses dump the garbage here and are least bothered to keep the area clean,” Simran said. “Until there is people’s participation in the keeping of areas clean the condition is not going to change,” Simran added.
