MARGAO: After encountering several roadblocks for quite some time, things seem to be finally moving in the right direction for Margao’s solid waste management.
The sub-committee headed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Monday told the Margao Municipal Council to outsource door-to-door waste collection and to float a tender to invite bids from prospective private players to start the project at the earliest.
The sub-committee has set Gandhi Jayanti as the tentative date to start door-to-door waste collection after complying with the tendering procedure.
Members of the sub-committee, including the Margao MLA, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, MMC Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar, Chief Officer Y B Tawde, Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat and MMC officials descended on the Sonsodo dumping site to get first-hand experience of the situation at the waste treatment plant.
Apart from door-to-door waste collection, the sub-committee has resolved to knock on the doors of the High Powered Coordination Committee headed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to call an urgent meeting of the panel to discuss and decide on the capping of the Sonsodo site and to put in place a mechanism to treat bio-medical waste. “Bio-medical waste is a matter of concern for all of us. We want the HPCC headed by the CM to help the city overcome the medical waste problem. We also want the Chief Minister to take a final call on the Sonsodo waste capping project. The MMC has been told to inquire why the PWD has so far not granted the technical sanction for the capping proposal”, Kamat said.
On recurring of fires at Sonsodo, the sub-committee had a lengthy meeting with the Assistant fire divisional officer, Nitin Raikar, wherein it was decided to attend to fires at the dump yard without delay. “People take for granted fires at Sonsodo because it is a waste dump. But we have decided all the players should show the same level of seriousness to the fires at Sonsodo”, Kamat added.
Replying to a question, he said the door-to-door waste collection pilot project would now be immediately extended to the Aquem area. In this connection, the sub-committee has asked the Director of Municipal Administration to provide minimum 2,000 bins to begin the exercise.
