MAPUSA: One of the senior most bureaucrats in the Government of Goa, Elvis Gomes, who is currently Goa Football Association’s (GFA) vice-president (South) and member secretary of Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) has emerged as the front runner for the post GFA’s president.
The elections for the Executive Body of GFA are scheduled for July 27, with the expiry of the four-year term of the present executive committee headed by Shrinivas Dempo.
Earlier, doubts were being expressed in some quarters regarding the eligibility of Elvis to contest for the top most post of the GFA. This was in view of some circular of the sports department doing the rounds wherein it was stipulated that Government officials should not hold posts in sports associations.
However, the picture has now been cleared as sources on condition of anonymity informed that the Government of Goa has no objections to one of its topmost official donning the mantle of the president of the GFA after going through the electoral process. Elvis received the go ahead on Friday.
With Elvis throwing his hat in the ring, the chances of a contest has diminished as he has a good track record as an efficient administrator in the Government as well as football circles.
“Earlier, there were doubts about my eligibility since I am a Government servant. But after the Goa Government gave me the clearance on Friday, I don’t mind to head the GFA since many clubs have already expressed their support,” stated Elvis.
Elvis certainly enjoys an excellent rapport with the Goan clubs and officials, who will be the ultimate deciders for the future of Goan football, State’s official sport.
